The Doctor is a renegade Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. He travels through time and space in an unreliable (and stolen) Type 40 TARDIS, and over the years has flittered between being a hunted criminal to the Lord President of the High Council to a grudgingly respected member of Time Lord society.
He is now the last remaining member of his species, following the last Great Time War against the Daleks. Though the Doctor was responsible for the destruction of the Dalek fleet and of their home planet, Skaro, he was also responsible for the destruction of Gallifrey.
Haunted by guilt, the ninth incarnation of the Doctor resumed travelling, alone, until he met one Rose Tyler, a shop girl from 21st century Earth. She joined him on the TARDIS and, in many ways, helped him come to terms with the results of the War.
They travelled together for some time, but were eventually separated when Rose became stranded on a parallel earth during the battle of Torchwood Tower, in which the Doctor had to defeat both the Cybermen and a group of Daleks who had somehow survived the war.
He is currently travelling with a trainee doctor, Martha Jones, who he insists is not a replacement for Rose.
The Doctor is currently in his tenth regeneration, after absorbing the power of the Time Vortex in order to protect Rose. This Doctor is a little more easygoing and cheeky than some previous versions of himself, but the losses he has suffered have also made him quick to anger, a lot less merciful and a lot more dangerous.
